Our Marine Chandlery And Engineering Business

[I:http://www.uniquearticlewizard.com/extras/pics/skipperthumb0.jpg]

Never say anything when you are relaxing with a drink! Well, it was four years ago when those words slipped out of my mouth “shall we get a boat”.

It was answered with a momentary grunt. The following weekend, around about Christmas, I found myself in Southampton with a very excitable husband and two small children!

[I:http://www.uniquearticlewizard.com/extras/pics/skipperthumb1.jpg] “So, do you like the boat?” said the husband.

“Erm, I think I’d like to save up for a bigger boat” said I, thinking that was the end of that. But no the next weekend got worse. We drove to Phwelli (Wales) through the snow to view yet another boat. It was December, cold, wet, windy and well Welsh! However this time my interest was sparked, yes I could imagine myself on this boat, Champagne in hand lying on the sundeck catching the rays in some Mediterranean port. Hang on wake up, we are in Wales in what seemed like a gale and also it won’t be the Mediterranean but more like the Medway in Kent.

Okay …So this was our boating experience. We took a mooring on the Medway River as it was simple to get from our home, and then started to learn everything we might need to know. We loved it, the kids loved it, the dog appeared to loved it, and all was good for our weekend retreat and fun until . . .

“Can I say something” said my husband as he came back down the pontoon “Well, I’ve just bought the Shipwrights business” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . All these dots are my silent thoughts. The place we used to use as a ‘get away’ had just changed in my mind. Now it was going to be about staff & customers all trooping down that same pontoon to ask questions. Well, this of course actually wasn’t what happened and the Shipwrights began to grow and prosper more than I had imagined until . . . . .

“Hi again” said husband coming down the pontoon “I’ve just bought that Boat Chandlers” * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *all those little star symbols are not silence but various none printable words.

So that’s how our new ventures began. The Chandlery was quickly moved to a larger building and we added a Bar and Caf which proved an instant hit with weekend boaters like ourselves, and also our very dear residents, who now constantly support us with the events we run and anything they can help out with. The bar now gives people a social area to congregate and have fun together and we now have a fantastic sense of community.

So our businesses were now expanding and I can say that Global Force started to take the Medway by Storm.

The empire did not stop there however. Although my husband stopped the “Hi, I’ve just bought the . . .” bit thank god! We expanded our marine engineers business to house the Volvo Penta Dealership in the Chandlery and also more recently we won the Yanmar Dealership. We also have a fantastic seamstress on site for canopies and upholstery. What she can’t do with material well can’t be done! We have turned the site into a thriving hub of activity offering a real one stop shop for boaters.

I am proud of the sense of community that has been created at our Globalforce Group of businesses. Yes, its been a challenge, and we are constantly striving to keep it all going forwards with new events all year round. We have a team of staff and friends who are very dedicated and always willing to go that extra mile to help out. It is greatly appreciated and I know that we are now able to pass this enthusiasm onto our customers.

But, just as I feel that we have gone that bit further, I muttered those famous words “Why don’t we get a boat”!

Buying a boat of any shape and size is probably going to be the second biggest purchase on a single item in your life and it is important to look at some basic points to ensure total peace of mind on your investment before handing over any money. This article breifly looks at some important factors to consider when looking to buy boats.

- Do the dealers have a good reputation and history and are they fully recognized by the boat manufacturer?

- When buying on finance, ask if the lenders are responsible for boat registration or you are. Also when will you need to insure the boat from?

- Ensure that the final price is fixed and agreed and then set a date and time for deposits or payments.

- Does the current owner have all of the valid ownership documents for the used boat?

- Pre arrange an agreed delivery date.

Knowing All About Yacht Charter For Your Vacation Joy

If you’re looking for expert vacation tips all about yacht charter, you’re in good company. Depending on which charter company you select, your experience will be in accordance with their policies. You might have to discern some of the specific policies in place for specific companies. Overall, you can usually expect that they will all have some basic applicable rules for you and your guests to follow. As you get ready to go, whether for a day or a long trip, you will need to be able to understand the policies and procedures set forth by the charter company.

most charter companies will offer you a detailed explanation of what they will require from you. There are often different requirements for those looking for a bareboat charter versus a captained charter. A bareboat charter means that you are taking the boat out by yourself.

Many first timers like the idea of having a captain on board. Others prefer the freedom of not having a captain. If you aren’t interested in having your charter accompanied, you might need to prove your skills by taking him or her out for a day sail. This can be required if you’re under 25 regardless of your experience level.

Some charters come fully provisioned, and all you really need to do is step aboard with your personal belongings. Other charters will give you partial provisions. Some companies require that you bring your own provisions. Make sure to check and see what will be prepared and available so that you know how to budget your time, money, and gear.

You and a representative of the company will have to go over the boat together. This will help assure you that all of the right supplies are on board while assuring the charter company that you are familiar with the operational features of the boat you’re chartering. It also gives you a chance to ask questions and make sure that the right equipment is on board. Never leave port without the appropriate supply of water and fuel.

Taking a few moments to go over the charts, make sure they are all there, and finding the closest hurricane holes along your planned route will help ensure that you have a safe and comfortable vacation. If you know in advance the proximity of the various places to wait through some bad weather, you will find that a simple run for cover will be more comfortable and less confusing. When the weather suddenly turns, the view of the water and the surrounding land can change dramatically.

Charter companies tend to have excellent audio access for their charters that are out and about. Often they monitor a specific VHF station, have direct phone numbers for cell phones that can get a good signal, and have emergency contact information posted in a convenient and easy to access location. If you are fearful that you might be facing a situation that you aren’t sure how to handle, contact the company from the water and ask the question. It’s much better to be safe rather than sorry.

Learning all about yacht charter and the companies that offer yacht charters will help you make the appropriate decisions for your vacation experience. You can get tips from people who charter on a regular basis or you can read reviews in the various publications that cover chartering issues. As you get to know an area with greater intimacy you’ll find that the whole family can benefit from this unique method of traveling.

If you are looking for genuine holiday fabulosity, you need to consider yacht chartering. Get the ultimate low down now in our yacht charter overview.

Abandoning Ship: What To Put In Your Ditch Bag

Let’s face it: Boats sometimes sink. Yes, it can even happen to YOUR boat – despite your vast experience, excellent skills, chart plotter, backup GPS, radar, AIS, fire extinguishers and all the other systems, procedures and equipment you have put into place to avoid that ultimate disaster. The fact is that you might run into a half submerged container in the middle of the night. Or your engine might catch fire. Or your rig might be blown overboard in a storm – and then puncture your hull.

Of course, catamarans are much less likely to actually sink than a monohull. Mainly because they don’t carry around a huge lump of lead in the form of a keel. But, even so, it is wise to be prepared in case the ultimate disaster does strike.

So, if your boat where to sink, what would you need to survive?

There are two important goals you need to consider:

1. You need to survive until you are rescued or are able to rescue yourself (eg. you drift ashore).

2. The rescuers need to find you as soon as possible.

Depending on the circumstances, and how quickly help may arrive, you will need to make sure you have sufficient survival gear:

First, you need a liferaft. If you don’t have one of those you are going to be swimming for a long time! We have a Viking RescYou. Make sure you get it serviced regularly. Make sure it is stowed where you can get to it. And make sure you know how to operate it. When you are buying one, or getting yours serviced, have a good look at one that has been deployed so you can see exactly what is in it.

Second, you need an abandon ship bag. Also known as a grab-bag, ditch bag, ditch kit or flee bag, this is a handy floating waterproof bag that is pre-loaded with some essential survival equipment.

Make sure that your ditch bag is waterproof and that it floats. Many of them are not fully waterproof, which can be a problem if you have to through it into the sea while you are clambering aboard your liferaft.

Essential too that the bag, with its contents, actually floats. Again, test it out, so you don’t have a nasty surprise watching your essential supplies descend to the depths just when you need them most.

I personally use the type of dry bags used for kayaking and rafting. They’re cheap, rugged, and work well.

Once you have prepared your bag, store it where it can be easily grabbed. Don’t bury it deep in one of your long term storage compartments deep in the bilges. When you need it, you need it in a hurry.
