Super Yachts, Octopus is the seventh largest yacht

Today I’m going to write about Octopus, which is currently the seventh largest luxury yacht in the world, the owner of the monstrous yacht is the co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen. The ship measures a massive 414 feet, with many luxuries to go along with it including, two helicopters, a submarine which can stay under water for 2 weeks at a time, and holds eight people. The ship also has an additional seven boats, for activities and lifeboats, the ship can boast its Music hall, and Movie theatre along with many other desirable features. It was previously the worlds largest privately owned super yacht, and held this spot for over five years. Espen Oino Naval Architects one of the world leaders in designing luxury yachts designed this particular yacht, in which German shipbuilders then built the exterior. The interior designer was Jonathan Quinn Barnett and Christian Grevstad. Maintenance and salaries on the ship cost a reportedly 10% percent of the initial cost of the yacht which is 200 million dollars. The Octopus Yacht only hire the world leaders in their fields to work on the ship, and everything is done to perfection, Royal Family standards.

Insuring your new Luxury Yacht

If you own a luxury yacht, you need to insure it.

When insuring your yacht for the right insurance policy you need to ask your self, what type of yacht you own, and what your plans are for it, holiday, living etc.

Yacht insurance not only covers the boat but also passengers, damage to other yachts etc.

Policy types

1. Third Party Liability covers yacht owners for any damage they are not liable for. It also will cover injuries to others.
2. Comprehensive Cover usually covers all accidental damage, fire, theft and vandalism but is subject to policy conditions.
3. New-for-Old Cover means that any item damaged will be replaced with a new one. But be careful there may be an age limit clause.
4. Racing Risks Cover is for those wishing to enter their boat in races.
5. Laid Up Period refers to the policies where it is established that a vessel is laid up ashore at certain times of the year.

Homeowner’s policy

It’s possible to have a yacht insured under your home insurance policy, but this will rarely cover specific risks such as running aground or wreck removal.

Always check the country limits of any yacht cover before heading off on holiday. Many countries will ask for evidence of insurance cover.

Which insurance company to choose

You should always choose a familiar and reputable insurance company. Many regular high street insurers are able to offer yacht insurance, but may not have the expertise to offer the best advice. You should always try to get insurance from the UK (if you live here) as then you are subject to UK laws.

Green yacht sailing

Sailing environmentally friendly

Sailing is an extremely green pastime, but it can have some effect on the sea read our article below to find out how you can beome more environmentally friendly.

Hazardous Waste

Incorrect disposal of waste is unnecessary – by using recycling facilities and reducing our waste, we are all contributing to a more environmentally friendly environment, it doesn’t take much effort.

* Cigarettes can be a hazard to birds and other wild life, the ends last up to 5 years, so try and put them out in a small tin, where you can dispose of them at a later date.
* lean up your mess as and when you finish with it, a small gust of wind can blow cans, and paper overboard.

Fuel

Oil and fuel pollutants fro refuelling and oil leaks are very commonly reported throughout the UK, so try using these steps to cut back on this kind of pollution.

* Good check ups on your yachts fuel connections help avoid leaks
* A drip tray under the engine is a requirement on many waterways. If it starts getting oily, find and mend the leak!
* Use a funnel when pouring fuel or oil

Limit sound pollution

* Fit sound insulation around your engine can significantly reduce noise by up to 85% so life on board will be more comfortable

Protecting our wildlife and Sea
* Excessive wash from your yachts can damage vegetation, and erode banks, so if you see that your making too much wash, slow down a little.

* Buy environmentally friendly washing up equipment, soaps and detergents etc.

Reduce exhaust fumes

Exhaust emissions are made up of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and various pollutants. By 2011, the Government has specified that 5% of fuel must come from renewable sources like biodiesel.

* An unmaintained motor yacht engine wastes more fuel and sends out more emissions than a maintained engine, we suggest you take your yacht for a regular service.
* Electric powered crafts have no exhaust emissions and are also extremely quiet, we suggest these for inland waterways.

It’s vital that we all maintain a healthy respect for the sea and work together to protect our shores. If in doubt, remember the 3 R’s…Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!
